What is poetry?
Poetry is writing that uses concise language, rhythm, and imagery to express ideas, emotions, or stories, often arranged in lines and stanzas rather than prose.
What is meter, and what is iambic pentameter?
Meter is the pattern of stressed and unstressed syllables in a line. Iambic pentameter is a five-beat line with an unstressed–stressed (da-DUM) pattern in each foot, a common rhythm in traditional English verse.
What is a stanza?
A stanza is a grouped set of lines in a poem, like a paragraph in prose. Common forms include couplets (2 lines) and quatrains (4 lines).
What is imagery and figurative language?
Imagery uses sensory details to paint pictures in the reader’s mind. Figurative language (e.g., metaphor, simile, personification) conveys ideas beyond literal meaning.
What is rhyme and what are common rhyme schemes?
Rhyme repeats final sounds of lines to create music. Common schemes include AABB (couplets), ABAB, and ABCB.
